James Gauerke

June 27, 1931 — November 9, 2024

James R. Gauerke, affectionately known as Jim, was born on June 27, 1931, in the quaint town of Danville, Illinois.

He departed this earthly realm on November 9, 2024, in Zanesville, Ohio, leaving a legacy woven with threads of service, leadership, and creativity.

A proud graduate of Northwestern University, Jim earned a business degree that would serve as a sturdy foundation for his professional endeavors. His early career saw him diligently working at Ansell Edmont in Coshocton, where he forged connections that would endure throughout his life.

After Ansell-Edmont, Jim purchased a partnership at Fyrepel Industries of Newark, Ohio while also starting Siena Industries of Coshocton , manufacturers of hazmat chemical suits, which was later purchased.

Jim later ascended to the role of Executive Director for the Coshocton Foundation, where his tireless dedication and impactful leadership earned him the respect and admiration of his community.

Along with Sam Clow and other theatrical enthusiasts, Jim was instrumental in the early 1970’s in relocating and raising funds for the current Footlight Players facility in Roscoe Village.

But his and his late wife Bettsy’s greatest and most heartfelt impact on the community, along with two other families, was the founding of Hopewell School in the basement of the Presbyterian church. This later led to the founding of Hopewell Industries and a group home for the special needs members of Coshocton.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim dedicated a portion of his life to serving his country in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. This period not only shaped his character but instilled in him the values of commitment and discipline which he carried throughout his life.

A passionate individual, Jim was known for his love of photography and his fervent enthusiasm for Formula 1 auto racing, both as a spectator and as the assigned Coshocton Tribune photographer. His artistic spirit flourished as he graced the stages of the Triple Lock Theater, where his talent shone through in an impressive forty-five performances. This theatrical pursuit also earned him recognition, culminating in prestigious accolades such as the Coshoctonian award and a lifetime achievement award from the Footlight Players.

Above all, Jim cherished his family deeply. He is survived by his beloved children John Gauerke, Matt (Christy) Gauerke, Ellen (Ray) Hardesty all of Coshocton, and Charley (Kelly) Gauerke of Staunton, VA. Jim's legacy also lives on through nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who carry forth his spirit and values. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Elizabeth "Bettsy" Gauerke, and dear son, Jimmy Gauerke, along with his father, Gilbert Gauerke, mother, Lydia G. (Kunkel) Gauerke and brother Richard Gauerke.

A memorial service in honor of Jim’s remarkable life will be held on November 23, 2024, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church located at 142 North 4th Street, Coshocton, OH 43812 with Coshocton County Veterans Honor Guard performing military honors.
