Barbara Custer, 73, of Coshocton, departed this life peacefully on August 26, 2025, at Morrison Hospice House in Zanesville. She was born in Coshocton, OH on August 13, 1952 to the late Tom and Janet (Setty) Strub. She was a cherished wife, devoted mother, and beloved friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Barbara graduated from Coshocton High School in 1970, proudly part of the first class in the "New High School." She went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1974, followed by a Master's in Education from Ashland University. Her passion for teaching flourished as she dedicated 12 years to shaping young minds at Coshocton City Schools.
An avid learner herself, Barbara found her calling not just in education, but also in literature, serving as a Reference Librarian at the Coshocton Public Library before retiring. Over the years, she became a well-respected figure in her community, known for her kindness and her commitment to uplift others. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church in Coshocton and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Barbara embraced life with a vibrant spirit. She loved cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. She was a gifted pianist, sharing her love for music both as a player and as a teacher. Her passion for dance led her to both ballroom dancing and teaching, bringing joy not only to herself but also to those fortunate enough to learn from her. In quieter moments, she found solace in reading, knitting, and quilting, as well as enjoying peaceful walks in nature, traveling in their RV, and spending time with her family pets.
On October 1, 1977, she married the love of her life, David A. Custer, and together they built a beautiful family. Barbara is survived by her loving husband, David, her sons Matt (Stephanie) Custer of Vermont and Daniel (Alexandra Kocan) Custer of Washington, her grandchildren, Adeline and Charlotte Custer of Vermont and Evie and Isla Custer of Washington, and her best friend, Tina Knoff, who stood by her side through thick and thin; her brother David (Sandy) Strub.
Barbara's infectious laughter and compassionate heart touched the lives of everyone she met. Her legacy will live on through the memories shared by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
